Renowned mindfulness teacher Jon Kabat-Zinn famously said, you can’t stop the waves but you can learn to surf. That quote has stuck with me since the first time I heard it. The promise provided is empowering: not only do we have the power to adapt, we have the power to thrive in the face of life’s challenges. In this workshop we explore how to surf the waves that characterize our modern times.
High levels of stress are rampant in the United States and reports of feeling stressed out or overwhelmed have become common. When we take a closer look at modern life, we can see how chronic stress has become so prevalent. Traffic jams, work pressure, email overload, financial concerns, and family demands – all part of a normal modern existence – can collectively keep us in a perpetual state of stress.
The American Institute of Stress estimates that 43% of all adults suffer adverse health effects due to stress and that 80% of all visits to primary care physicians are for stress-related complaints or disorders. Stress has been linked to leading causes of death in the United States including heart disease, cancer, lung ailments, accidents, cirrhosis and suicide. In addition, stress has an impact on sleep, concentration, decision-making and emotional wellbeing, as well as relationships at home and at work.
Many of us simply try to adapt to this way of being, rather than learn how to better cope with these demands. Quick fixes keep us in a vicious cycle of stress, robbing us of sleep, energy and overall wellbeing in exchange for short-term relief. Remaining in this vicious cycle can mean risking burnout, exhaustion, disease or all three.
Since it is unlikely the world around us is going to slow down, how can we achieve a healthy balance between these demands and our need to recharge and restore? In my workshop, Stress Management for Modern Times, participants explore pathways to inner peace amid the chaos of modern life. Taking a practical approach, the workshop provides information and inspiration for building resilience and establishing healthy coping strategies and relaxation techniques.
Healthy solutions are available and this practical workshop presents them in an accessible and achievable manner. Participants leave with greater awareness and a toolbox full of proven solutions to better manage stress. The workshop format is flexible and can be scaled for a one-hour lunch-and-learn to a lengthier, interactive program.
